      The Age of Exploration
THE AGE OF DISCOVERY — Was the Earth flat?
      Without background sound

      How big was the world?

      I will know

Why Europeans started trade routes to the east by sea and the navigational instruments they used.

      Think

At the beginning of the 15th century, Europeans had limited geographical knowledge.

They were very familiar with all of Europe and the territories around the Mediterranean and Black Seas. They also knew about India, China and Japan because travellers and merchants like Marco Polo brought silk, spices and other products back from Asia.

But Europeans knew very little about most of Africa. They did not know that America, Oceania and Antarctica even existed.

Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant. In 1271 he initiated a journey following the Silk Road that took him to the court of Kublai Khan, the last ruler of the Mongol Empire, in China. When he returned, he told all of his stories to a friend, who wrote them down and later published them in a book called The travels of Marco Polo.

He described the incredible journeys and life in the Far East. This work fascinated others and made them more interested in learning about those distant lands.

      What was the Silk Road?

      Think

Exotic products from the Far East, such as silk and spices, were highly appreciated in medieval Europe. The merchants carried them along the Silk Road, a trade route that linked Constantinople to China.

Why did European started exploring by sea?

In 1453, the Turks conquered Constantinople and occupied  the Byzantine Empire, disrupting the Silk Road. Consequently, European merchants wanted to find other routes to the East.

      Think

Important advances in navigation made it possible for European expeditions to travel long distances:

Cartography. Portolan charts were nautical charts showing coasts, sea routes and possible obstacles. These maps only included land features (like mountains) which helped to establish orientation.

New navigational instruments made it possible to sail at night so sea voyages became quicker.
