To the Aztecs, Tlaloc was one of the most important gods in their pantheon all together with the god of war Huitzilopochtli and the feathered serpent Quetzalcoatl. Tlaloc was the ruler of rain and lightning, he was said to brought fertility to the crops and the people.
He is often depicted with huge eyes and large fangs. He also wears a heron-feather headdress. In his hand, he holds a magical rattle said to bring the thunder. Around his neck, he wears a necklace of jade beads.
One of the most impressive representations of the god found is the gigantic stone statue now outside the National Museum of Anthropology in Ciudad de México.
